Leadership in hotel management and leadership orientations of managers: An investigation in 5-star hotels in İstanbul

Sc., Enstitute of Social SciencesDepartment of Tourism and Hotel ManagementAdviser: Asst.Prof.Orhan AKOVAJuly, 2005, 170 PagesABSTRACTThe main purpose of this research is to search for ?task orientation? and?people orientation? leadership dimensions of the individuals who work as managersin the upper positions in hotel management. It also has been analyzed whether ?taskorientation? or ?people orientation? leadership dimensions differ due to thedemographical characteristics of the hotel managers. The universe of the research hasbeen determined as the managers in the upper positions who have been working forfive star hotels in stanbul. It has been decided to be used a questionnaire as thetechnique of data collection. 213 questionnaire were dispensed to the target massthrough the human resource or front-office manager of each participating hotel. As164 questionnaire has been returned, the response rate was realised at %76,9. Thedata collected has been analyzed using descriptive statistics, cronbach?s alpha,independent samples t-test, one-way Anova and Kruskal-Wallis H test.As a result of the research, it has been established that hotel managers? taskorientation leadership dimension were higher than people orientation leadershipdimension. They showed that they had tendency to almost low level at peopleorientation leadership dimension and that they were close to almost high level at taskorientation leadership dimension. Also, it has been exposed that there weresignificiant differences between respondents? demographical characteristics (in alldemographical characteristics except ?start to work as manager first at the currentestablishment?) and their task orientation and people orientation leadershipdimensions.Key Words: Hotel Management, Hotel Managers, Leadership, stanbul.
