The effect of storyline method on student achievement about the sources of our country unit in 6th grade social studies curriculum

The aim of this study is to determine the Effect Of Storyline Method On Student Achievement About The Sources Of Our Country Unit In 6th Grade Social Studies Curriculum. This study was conducted experimentally on the 6th grade students studying at Abant Primary School in 2006-2007 academic year. 42 students were included in the study, 21 of them were chosen as the sample group and 21 of them as control group. While forming the sample and control groups; the equivalence has been provided due to the numbers, academic achievement level and the pre-test results. During the research, the unit of ?The Sources of Our Country? was taught by storyline method to sample group and in control group teacher centered and traditional methods were used. The achievement test which was used to collect data was prepared by the researcher and consisted of 15 questions related with the objectives of the unit. And it was applied both at the beginning and at the end of the instruction. The data was analysed by using statistical methods such as average, standard deviation, t test for dependent and independent samples. The conclusions can be summarized as follows;: 1. The achievement level about the unit in sample group which were taught by storyline method was higher than the control group which was taught by teacher centered and traditional method. There was a meaningful significancein favour of the control group. 2. The achievement level of the students in sample and control groups about the sources of our country unit was low before the application. 3. The instruction conducted by storyline method was effective on increasing the achievement level of the students. 4. The instruction which was conducted by the traditional method was effective on increasing the achievement level of the students on this unit but it?s level was lower when compare with sample group. 5. The achievement level of the students toward each objectives of the unit who learnt by using storyline method improved after the application. 6. The achievement level of the students toward each objectives of the unit who learnt by using traditional method did not improve efficiently but the students achievement level toward some objectives increased.
