Abstract (EN)
Specific Learning Disorder (SLD) falls into the category of special needs and is defined as a low level of academic success of the individual that cannot be explained by sensory or intellectual impairment (APA, 1994). Using phenomenological qualitative design, the purpose of this study is to examine the experiences and needs of the mothers of children diagnosed with SLD during and after the diagnosis process, and the effects of SLD on their social life and close personal relationships. Utilizing the purposeful sampling technique, 11 mothers with an SLD child were selected from those mothers who applied to Samsun Guidance and Research Centre. One-to-one interviews were conducted with the participants using an interview form consisting of semi-structured open-ended questions designed by the researcher. The data were analyzed using content analysis and thematic analysis techniques following phenomenological methodological guidelines. Based on these findings, two core themes are identified. The first core theme "experiences of the mothers" was categorized under the subthemes of emotional, cognitive and behavioural/environmental dimensions. The second core theme "mothers' needs" was categorized under the subthemes of economic needs, spousal support, SLD education, psychological support, and social support. The results are discussed in light of the literature and implications and recommendations are presented. Keywords: Parenting, Phenomenology, Special Needs, Specific Learning Disorders, Qualitative Research
