Patara Harbor Street coins

The main purpose of this thesis is to examine and chronologically catalog all the coins found during the excavations between 1989 and 2020 on Harbor Street, which is in the busiest part of Patara, and to evaluate their span of usage by comparing them with the architectural phases of the area. As a result of the work carried out in line with this purpose, a total of 425 coins were included in the catalog. In this study, first of all, a concise information about the history and geography of Patara is presented. Then, numismatic research and publications about the coins found in archaeological excavations throughout Lycia are introduced. Then, information was given about the excavations and research in the area where the material was found and the architecture of this area. In the part corresponding to the fourth part of the thesis, theoretical information about the evaluation of the coins found in archaeological excavations is given. In the light of this information, the coins found in the same contexts are examined and the densities of the coins are determined in accordance with the places they were found. Coins recovered in stratigraphic units are evaluated holistically and their date of last use is determined. Harbor Street coins cover the issues from Hellenistic Period to the Seljuk Period. Numerically, Late Roman coins dominate. In the area, which continued to be used until the 7th century AD, coins dating to a later period were found on the surface. However, it is related to the ongoing life of the city rather than the activity in the area. The most concentrated coin group in the area evaluated according to stratigraphic units is those belonging to the Late Roman Period. However, the latest dated coins are dated to the 6th-7th century AD. As a result, with this study, the coins found in Harbor Street are discussed and evaluated holistically for the first time. In this direction, finding a sub-history containing the remains of numismatic finds will provide the opportunity to compare with other archaeological finds studied.
