A study of burnout levels of teachers,attendent in Pendik district,according to some demographic variables

This research is a descriptive study which has been performed to determine whether primary and secondary school teachers? levels of occupational burnout can differ according to the variables such as age, sex, marital status, educational background, number of years spent teaching, branch, school types, average number of students in the classroom, socioeconomic situation of the school environment, pleasantness of the work environment, be approved by the administrators, level of professional accomplishment, willingnes for teaching and moral satisfaction.This research was done by surveying the 4048 teachers from 67 primary and 18 secondary schools, in Pendik district within Istanbul. The teachers are randomly selected as the samples of the research by the method of ?Group Sampling?. The sample consisted of 404 teachers, from primary (n=270) and secondary (n=134) schools.In the research, the data were accumulated by means of a survey that contains two separate parts. The first part includes Personal Information Form which was improved by the investigator, and in the second part Maslach Burnout Invertory was applied to measure the teachers burnout levels.For evaluating the data gathered from the study, SPSS 13.0 program were used. For the research, frequency (f), percent (%), mean ( x ), one-way variance analysis (F) and t-test were used.According to the results found out from the research, following variables increase the level of teachers burnout: age, marital status, educational background, number of years spent teaching, branch, average number of students in the classroom, socioeconomic situation of the environment, pleasantness of the work environment, be approved by the administrators, level of professional accomplishment, willingnes for teaching and moral satisfaction. Age and the school types are not the factors which significantly affect teachers burnout levels.Key words: burnout, personal accomplishment, desensitization, emotional exhaustion, depersonalization
