Abstract (EN)
This prospective, randomized controlled study was conducted to investigate the effect of vein imaging device on the success of peripheral intravenous catheter (PIC) insertion in children. The research was conducted between November 2015 and February 2016 at the Emergency Department of the Pediatric Hospital of the Faculty of Medicine of Ege University. The study population included patients who presented to the Ege University Children's Emergency Service and underwent PIC insertion. Of the population, children aged between 1 and 10 years and matched the inclusion criteria of the study comprised the study sample. Stratified Randomization was used for the sample selection and 110 patients were enrolled in the study (56 in the intervention group and 54 in the control group). To collect the study data, the "Case Report Form" and Veinlite vein imaging device were used. The data were collected by a researcher and a nurse trained by the Veinlite ven imaging device consultant. During the collection of data, after the sociodemographic characteristics of the patients were recorded in the Case Report Form, the peripheral IV catheterization procedure was performed by the nurse. While the children in the intervention group underwent PIC insertion the Veinlite vein imaging device, the children in the control group underwent PIC insertion through the conventional method. Numbers and percentage distributions, chi square, the student t test and correlation analysis were used in the analysis of the data. (IBM SPSS statistics 20.0 software) To carry out the study, the written permission was obtained from the Ethics Committee of the Ege University Nursing Faculty and from the Ethics Committee of the Ege University Hospital, and the written / verbal consent was obtained from the patients / parents who agreed to participate in the study. In this study, the mean age of the children was 4.48 ± 2.63 years. Of them, 52.7% were boys, 55.5% had fewer, 84.5% had no chronic diseases, and 67.3% had no dehydration. In the control group patients, the success rate was 72% in the first peripheral IV catheterization, the mean number of interventions was 1.31 ± 0.25, the complication rate was 3.7% (hematoma) and the mean duration of the interventions was 59.68 ± 22.5 seconds. In the intervention group patients, the first attempt success rate was 92.9% , the mean number of interventions was 1.07 ± 0.54, and the mean duration of the interventions was 49.98 ± 18.4 seconds. No complications were occured. In the first the peripheral IV catheterization, the success rate was higher, the mean number of the interventions was lower and the duration of the interventions was shorter in the intervention group in which the Veinlite device was used (p <0.05). In the control group, the degree of dehydration affected the duration of the PIC insertion (p <0.05). In both groups, variables such as age, gender and the presence of chronic diseases did not affect the success of PIC (p> 0.05).
