Abstract (EN)
Aim: The aim of this study is to measure periodontal bone loss in individuals of various age groups using cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) and to investigate the distribution of these values according to age, gender, jaw type, tooth type and tooth surface width. It is also aimed to examine the effect of local factors on bone loss in terms of restorations such as fiilings and crowns. Materials and Methods: In the present study, 200 CBCT images obtained with any indication from randomly selected patients to form the age groups of 19-29, 30-39, 40-49, ≥50 years, were evaluated. The distance between the alveolar crest and the cemento enamel junction (CEJ)) was measured and values above 2 mm were considered as bone loss. The presence of angular defects in teeth with bone loss was also examined. Results: Bone loss increased with age in the patients included in the study. The mean bone loss in men is 1.15 mm, and the mean bone loss in women is 0.82 mm, with men having more bone loss than women. The most bone loss was observed in the upper molars, followed by the lower incisors. While there was no significant difference between the jaws in terms of mean bone loss values, more bone loss was observed in the distal surfaces of the upper jaw compared to the lower jaw. The relationship between tooth surface width and bone loss in CEJ differed according to tooth type. In the lower incisors and lower premolars, bone loss increased as the buccolingual and mesiodistal width of the teeth in the CEJ decreased. Conclusion: All these results showed that periodontal bone loss is affected by age, gender, tooth type and tooth surface width.
