Abstract (EN)

Permethrin is a synthetic pyrethroid that can contaminate the aquatic ecosystem and adversely affects the aquatic ecosystem organisms as a result of being carried by rain water from the soil surface in the fight against insects near water sources or leaving industrial wastes to the waters without treatment. Therefore, investigating the effects on aquatic organisms is important for aquatic ecosystem health. The aim of this thesis is to determine the acute toxic effects of permethrin in freshwater mussels, which is a non target species, and to investigate its sublethal effects with immunological and biochemical parameters. In the experiments, the freshwater mussel Unio delicatus a species used in aquatic biological monitoring and toxicology studies, was used as a model organism. Acute toxic values (mean lethal concentration, LC50) were determined as 119.4430 (69.569-168.967) mg/L for 96 hours based on Finney's probit analysis method. Freshwater mussels were then exposed to permethrin concentrations of 1/10, 1/50, and 1/100 (1.19 mg/L, 2.38 mg/L, and 11.9 mg/L) of the 96-hour LC50 for 96 hours and 7 days exposed over a period of time. At the end of the experiment, the mean total hemocyte count of the experimental groups showed a statistically significant decrease compared to the control groups (p<0.05). When the antioxidant glutathione (GSH), advanced oxidation protein products (AOPP) and malondialdehyde (MDA) parameters of permethrin on the gill and digestive gland tissues were examined, no statistically significant result was determined (p>0.05). In conclusion; It has been determined that permethrin has a low toxic effect in acute exposure for the freshwater mussel Unio delicatus, and does not cause an acceptable effect in glutathione, advanced oxidation protein products and lipid peroxidation values at subletal concentrations.
