Assess with rubric of the student?s performance in the mid-term piano exams

This research aims at developing an evaluation instrument that can be used in piano exams. This evaluation instrument, referred as `rating instrument? in the literature is called `the rubric evaluation instrument. The application of piano rubric was done with the contribution of piano instructors working at Gazi University, Faculty of Education and the third year students taking this course.The scope of this study includes 10 universities which have Music Teaching Schools under the program of Fine Art Teaching. These universities were chosen by considering their foundation dates, from the oldest to the newest, and the number of their piano instructors. The significance level was determined as `00,5?. A content analyze was carried out to get the lecturers? opinions. A pre-study was conducted to see the content validity of the piano rubric before preparing the scale. In this pre-study the criteria which are taken into consideration to evaluate mid?term exams performances were assessed by 37 piano instructors. Principal component analysis was done to test the constrictive validity of the scale. To compare the assessment of the piano rubric, the data taken from two independent referees were coded on the SPSS program .To compare the two different date, the mean scores of the referees for each performance was analyzed through t-test. After the piano rubric was formed, the two referees in the board were assigned to assess the students? performance in the mid-term piano exams. In the meantime, the rubric questionnaire was applied by a board of 5 members, as usual, in the mid-term exams. When the scorings of the independent two referees and juries were analyzed, it was concluded that there was no statistic significance between the scoring of the first and the second referee. Moreover, It was concluded that there was no statistical significance between the scoring of the first referee and that of the jury and the scoring of the second referee and that of the jury as expected.
