Influence of pack borinizing treatment on corrosion protection of plastic mold steels

Nowadays, mass production has become very important with developing technology and increasing production needs. Mold production method is mainly preferred as mass production method. Increasing the corrosion resistance of these molds takes the first place in terms of importance and constitutes an important part of the problems encountered in the industry. Plastic mold steel parts (I1, R1, C1, N1) used in the automotive industry were supplied by Standard Profil in this study. Supplied samples of surface roughness values were measured appropriate. Surface rougness value was determined by range of grind in accordance to surface quality of mould to sandpapered with SiC 240 grit in current situation. In first stage, samples were prepared sandpapering with 1200 grit to investigate effect of corrosion resistance. Next, their surface roughness values were measured after sandpapering with 240 and 120 grit. Then samples were exposed to electrochemical corrosion tests and Tafel curves were compared for two condition. At the same time, C1 steel relatively low cost and mould steel samples 1.2842 (90MnCrV8) presented alternatingly were carried out pack boronizing were carried out to C1 steel relatively low cost and mould steel samples 1.2842 (90MnCrV8) with using Ekabor-2 powder at 850 oC for 4 hours to investigate pack boronizing effect on corrosion behavior. Also, corrosion behavior and speed of sandpapered samples with 240 grit and 1200 grit were compared with boronizing samples.
