Abstract (EN)

Plato uses the concept of khôra, which he first introduced in his Timaeus, to solve the problem of methexis. Positioned as a third genus alongside the intelligible eidos and their sensible copies, khôra makes it possible to explain the sensible in terms of the intelligible. However, according to our claim, khôra could not be explained within the Platonic dialectic in relation to the "One". Plato's failure to explain the ground of the unity of khôra also determines the discussions about space in the history of thought after him. In this sense, Plato's presentation of khôra is the birthplace of the debates on space throughout the history of thought. The question of what khôra is as the space of physical objects is still unclear today. The philosophical tradition that began in Ancient Greece can also be understood as an effort to analyze the elements and logic of language, and from this point of view, to observe different aspects of existence (to make it the subject of thought and knowledge). In this study, we follow this line of philosophizing, and we will address the concept of khôra by turning to the sign as the most fundamental element of language. We argue that signs can be interpreted as khôra in the sense that they "become transparent" and "display something other than themselves", and in this sense become the space of something else. In this sense, we argue that signs are an "interface" and "space" that the human psyche uses to present meanings to itself. The main claim of this thesis is that space is also an interface that the "I" uses to present the self to itself, and in this sense, both the sign and space as the space of physical objects are two different aspects of one and the same act. Therefore, we argue that an inquiry into the sign, and specifically the linguistic sign, can enable us to talk about khôra, the space of physical objects.
