Abstract (EN)

This study aims to present the critical text of the prose work Kitâb-ı Bahriyye (Book of Navigation) written in 1521 by the famous Ottoman cartographer and mariner Pīrī Muhyiddin b. Hacı Mehmed, also known as Pīrī Reīs, who lived in the 16th century. This work on geography and seafaring, the author's copy of which has not yet been found, was widely read in the period when it was written and was popular in the following centuries and was copied many times. The work consists of 4 chapters except the introduction. In the introduction, under the title "Sources and studies on Kitâb-ı Bahriyye", the studies on this subject from the past to the present are evaluated. Since the conditions of the period in which the author lived will affect his work, the maritime history and maritime trade in the period in which Pîrî Reîs lived are briefly mentioned. In the first chapter; information about the life, personality and works of Pîrî Reîs is given. In the second chapter; phonetic and morphological features of the text are discussed within the scope of language analysis. In the third chapter; a critical text of the work based on a total of 7 copies of the work in Turkey and abroad has been set and transcribed. In the fourth chapter, the index and dictionary of the text have been prepared. Finally, in the appendices, two world maps of Pîrî Reîs dated 1513 and 1528, the drawings found in the Yeni Cami (A) copy of Kitâb-ı Bahriyye and the tables showing the chapter order of the copies used in the critical text are included.
