Relatıonshıp between dıetary inflammatory index score and serum chemerın concentratıon in women wıth polycystıc ovary

This study was conducted to evaluate the relationship between dietary inflammatory index (DII) score and serum chemerin concentration, which are thought to contribute to the pathophysiology of the disease in female individuals with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), biochemical hyperandrogenism and homeostasis model assessment for insulin resistance (HOMA-IR). This study was conducted on a total of 88 female individuals, 44 female volunteers (25.2 ± 5.3 years) who were diagnosed with PCOS according to the 2003 Rotterdam criteria by an endocrinologist and 44 volunteers, female individuals in the control group matched for age (26.6 ± 5.2 years) and body mass index between the ages of 18-45 who applied to Ankara Training and Research Hospital Endocrinology outpatient clinic, between February-December 2020. The routine blood biochemical parameters of women with PCOS and control group were obtained from the hospital system, and blood samples were taken for serum chemerin analysis. The questionnaire questioning the general information of individuals, REZZY Eating Disorders Scale to determine risk of eating disorders, International Physical Activity Questionnaire-Short Form was applied to evaluate their physical activity status, anthropometric measurements and three-day food consumption records were taken by the researcher. DII score was calculated using food consumption records. DII score was evaluated in two categories as median lower and higher. The mean serum chemerin concentration of individuals in PCOS and control groups is 3.3 ± 1.5 ng / mL and 2.7 ± 1.4 ng / mL, respectively (p <0.05). There is a significant positive correlation between serum chemerin and triglycerides (r=0.429, p<0.01), total cholesterol (r=0.422, p<0.01), LDL cholesterol (r=0.317, p<0.05) and total cholesterol/HDL cholesterol ratio (r=0.348, p<0.05) in individuals in the PCOS group, however, there is no significant relationship between HOMA-IR, dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate, total and free testosterone (p >0.05). The average DII score of individuals in the PCOS and control groups is 3.8 ± 1.7 and 3.8 ± 1.4, respectively (p> 0.05). Serum chemerin concentration (3.6 ± 1.4 ng / mL) of individuals in the PCOS group with a high DII score was significantly higher than the individuals in the control group (2.6 ± 1.7 ng / mL) (p <0.05). There is no significant relationship between DII score and biochemical parameters [excluding fasting blood glucose (r=-0.309, p <0.05)] of individuals in the PCOS and control group. The results of this study are that the serum chemerin concentration, which shows inflammatory properties, is high in individuals with PCOS, independent of obesity and high serum chemerin concentrations are associated with high DII scores, indicating that inflammation in the pathogenesis of PCOS may be associated to chemerin.
