Postmodernist cities and heterotopias

The dynamics of the industrial era have changed our society in many ways. These changes have directly affected cities and architecture and thus their usual definitions have been removed or reconstituted over the years. New approaches, designed under the authority of modernist architects and city planners, aimed to be globally recognized and prevailed. Just a few decades later these same approaches began to lose their power with implicit reactions to modernist ideology. New approaches and critics appeared in the 1960's and became widespread in the 1970's under the postmodern metanarrative. Soon after, the new ideas of postmodernism penetrated into the field of urbanism and architecture. They became fertile disciplines for postmodernism. The ascent of postmodernism reached a peak with its ideas on localisation, consumtion, pluralism and eclectism. The concept of Heterotopia, which was first championed by Michael Foucalt, is critical because it is useful in explanations of spatial planning and architecture. Heterotopian dynamics are already overt in actualw ideas of space and time. In conclusion; heterotopias can be understood as islands of order in the increasing disorder of universe.
