ABSTRACT Evaluating the effect of Bifidobacterium lactis and Hindiba Inulin on necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) development and feeding intolerance in premature babies. Aim: To evaluate the effect of Bifidobacterium lactis and Hindiba Inulin on necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) development and feeding intolerance of newborns in neonatal intensive care unit.(NICU) Material and methods: We included 89 premature newborn patients who have been following for feeding intolerance in Çukurova University between December 2010 and June 2013. The cases are examined retrospectively for demographic datas, maternal factors, feeding features, clinical situations and treatment. All cases had at least two findings of feeding intolerance. Cases are seperated in two groups; which are study group (group 1) and control group (group 2). The cases in group 1 were given 3x1 mL Bifidobacterium Lactis (5x10^9CFU probiotic) + Hindiba Inulin (900 mg prebiotic) compound (Maflor) diluated with 10 ml distilled water. The group 2 patients who were not given similar treatment. Results: When we compare the demographic datas there was no statistically significant difference between gender and gestation age. However in study group, 1.minute APGAR score and birth weight were low and statistically significant. Furthermore the study group has more baby with SGA but it was not statistically significant. Groups compared in terms of total parenteral nutrition (TPN) time, orogastric tube (OG) feeding beginning time, oral feeding beginning time and beginning enteral feeding. There were no statistically significant difference for OG tube feeding beginning time. Oral feeding beginning time and enteral feeding beginning time were long in the study group and they were statistically significant (p<0,05). Groups compared in terms of mechanical ventilation, umbilical vein catheter duration, umbilical artery catheter duration, sepsis, nasocomial infection, positive blood culture results. There was no statistically significant difference between these parameters. When the cases compared for the discharge weight there was no statistically significant difference (p>0,05). The patients in study group gained more weight than control group and this was statistically significant (p>0,05). In our study there was no statistically significant difference in terms of NEC (p>0,05). While the cases in study group stay in stage 1, %33.3 of the cases in control group advanced to stage 2. Conclusion: We investigated the effect of B. Lactis and Hindiba Inulin on feeding intolerance of premature newborn and NEC. In our study the cases which have more negative demographic data gain more weight than control group. The cases in study group catch the discharge weight of cases in control group. We advocate that probiotics and prebiotics prevent feeding intolerance and NEC progression. KEY WORDS: Prematurity, Feeding intolerance, Necrotizing enterocolitis, Probiotic, Prebiotic
