The prevalence and determinants of diabetes distress among adult people with diabetes mellitus in telafer city

Background: The incidence of diabetes mellitus between adults has increased dramatically throughout the previous decades. Living with this chronic disease carries a lot of biopsychosocial burdens for patients. Diabetes Distress is one of these serious psychological consequences that could be faced by diabetic patients. Aims: this study objective to assess the prevalence and determinants of diabetes distress among adult people with diabetes mellitus in Telafer city. Methodology: This cross-sectional descriptive study is conducted in Iraq, Nineveh governorate, Telafer city. A purposive sample of (525) adult individuals with diabetes mellitus attending Telafer general hospital and primary health care centers are selected in the study. Data for the study are collected by using Diabetes Distress Scale and through the use of the interview method. Result: The study reveals that the overall prevalence of Diabetes Distress is (53.3%). The study results proved that there is a highly significant association between diabetes distress and many participant characteristics. The diabetes drug type is the only variable that show no significant association with diabetes distress. However, the study indicated that only four variables under study are predictive of diabetic distress. These factors are occupational status, economic status {low-income level, middle income level}, physical activity, and comorbidity. Conclusion: This study is clinically importent, since its hilghted the high prevlance of diabetes distress in Telafer city. The study also identifed several factors that predict the development of diabetes distress aomg diabetic patients in Telafer city.
