Effects of two different breastfeeding positions on breastfeeding self-efficacy, breastfeeding success and postpartum comfort in primiparous mothers

INTRODUCTION AND AIM: This study was conducted to determine the effects of biological breastfeeding and football hold breastfeeding position on breastfeeding success, breastfeeding self-efficacy and postpartum comfort in primiparous mothers. MATERIAL AND METHODS: It was planned as a randomized controlled experimental research type. The study sample consisted of a total of 68 mother and newborn pairs, 34 in the initiative 1 (biological breastfeeding position) group and 34 in the initiative 2 (football hold breastfeeding position) group. Data were collected using the "Mother Information Form", "Newborn Information Form", "LATCH Breastfeeding Diagnosis and Evaluation Scale Form", "Postpartum Breastfeeding Self-Efficacy Short Form" and "Postpartum Comfort Scale". Breastfeeding duration was measured by timing with a stopwatch. The data obtained in the study were analyzed using the free trial version of SPSS (Statistical Package for Social Sciences) for Windows 25.0 program. RESULTS: The breastfeeding duration of the mothers in the initiative 1 group was significantly longer than that of the mothers in the initiative 2 group.The mean LATCH scores of the initiative 1 group were significantly higher than the initiative 2 group at the 24th hour breastfeeding after birth. There was no significance between the initiative 1 and initiative 2 groups regarding postpartum comfort and breastfeeding self-efficacy (p>0.05). CONCLUSION: It was determined that the breastfeeding duration and breastfeeding success were significantly higher in the biological breastfeeding group. There is no difference in postpartum comfort and breastfeeding self-efficacy between biological breastfeeding and football hold breastfeeding position breastfeeding position groups.
