Investigation of osteopontin, apelin, leptin and adiponektin levels in patients with psoriazis and evaluate the relationship between the metabolic syndrome

Psoriasis is a chronic, inflammatory disease of skin, which proceed with T lymphocyte activation. It was reported that an increase was observed in the frequency of metabolic syndrome in individuals with chronic inflammatory disease, as chronic inflammation leads to atherogenesis and peripheral insulin resistance. Several important molecules such as leptin, adiponectin and apelin, which was released from lipid tissue and it was suggested that levels of these molecules altered in metabolic syndrome by increasing obesity. In this study, it was aimed to investigate potential relationship between these molecules and psoriasis.Fasting plasma glucose, triglyceride, HDL cholesterol and serum adiponectin, leptin and apelin levels were measured in 40 adult patient with psoriasis and 40 healthy individuals. In addition, BMI, waist circumference and blood pressure were measured in patient and control groups.Metabolic syndrome frequency was found as significantly higher in patients with psoriasis than control group (p<0.05). It was found that serum adiponectin levels were significantly lower in patients with psoriasis than those in control group, while leptin, apelin and osteopontin levels were significantly higher. No significant difference was found between psoriasis patients with metabolic syndrome and without metabolic syndrome serum adiponectin, leptin and apelin levels . Among the patients with psoriasis, PASI score was mild in 18 patients , moderate in 10 patients and high in 12 patients. It was found that DLQI index was significantly high in patients with high PASI score . A significant increase was observed in serum leptin and apelin levels in patients at risk regarding waist circumference.In conclusion, our study demonstrates the frequency of metabolic syndrome in patients with psoriasis. We think that adiponectin, leptin, apelin and osteopontin may play role in the pathogenesis of psoriasis, but these adipokines aren?t markers, which are related to severity of disease.
