Abstract (EN)

Arterial catheterization is a common procedure for continuous blood pressuremonitoring andfrequent blood sampling in intensive care units, emergency departments and operation rooms. Due to anatomic convenience, ease of cannulationand a low rate of complications, radial artery is the firstly preferred site for arterial cannulation. Most frequently used techniques for radial artery cannulation are detecting landmarks of the artery by palpation or performing cannulation using ultrasound (US) guidance. In this study, we investigated the initial success rate and the factors affecting this success rate in radial artery catheterization. A total of 108 patients underwent radial artery catheterization in the operating room evaluate in this study. All patients' data were recorded in the catheterization follow-up form. When all patients were examined, the first entry success rate was 45.9%. The success rate of the first intervention was 69.4% in the USG guided cannulation group and 27.1% in the palpation cannulation group. Logistic regression analysis was conducted to investigate the factors affecting the success rate of initial intervention. Concomitant USG use significantly improved the success rate when radial artery catheterization was performed. In addition, although the diameter of the radial artery was 2 mm wide, it was found to be the other factor that increased the initial penetration. There was no significant effect of the other factors on the first entry success rate. In conclusion, we found that the use of USG during radial artery catheterization increased initial success rate. Therefore, we believe that increasing the use of USG during radial artery catheterization will increase success rate and decrease the likelihood of recurrent intervention.
