Effect of hyaluronic acid on adhesion and tendon healing in rats

endon injuries are often encountered and involved a troublesome healing process as adhesion and rupture in human and domestic animals. The aim of this study was to determine repetitive applications of hyaluronic acid on tendon healing by macroscopical, biomechanical, and histopathological. A total of 30 Spraq Dawley rats were used in each group of 10 animals in each group at the age of 6 months. Following anesthesia, adhesion model was created after primary tendon repair and the skin was closed with simple separate sutures. After the operations in the study, the first group (group 1) was considered as the control group and no postoperative treatment protocol was applied. Group 2 was applied at 0.075 ml / kg of hyaluronic acid immediately after the operation around the tendon of the 10 animals in the second group, Group 3 was applied same dosage of HA on days of 0, 3, 7 and 14. At the 6th postoperative week, the macroscopic, biomechanical, and histopathological data obtained were evaluated statistically. In the findings of macroscopic evaluation, the macroscopic adhesion degree was found to be significantly low in the 2 and 3 groups in which to the control group (p< 0,05). A significant difference was not seen between the groups 2 and 3, (p>0,05). When the inflamation degree was observed lower in the group 3, it was not seen to be neo-vascularisation, fibroblastic proliferation, and fibrosis between groups. There was no difference in tension between groups biomechanically (p>0.05). In conclusion, detailed studies are needed as to whether HA can be used as a part of the postoperative management following primary tendon repair.
