Life and ideas of Rauf Tamer

This thesis examines the life and ideas of Rauf Tamer, a prominent figure in Turkish journalism. Born in Sivas in 1937, Tamer began his career in journalism during his university years while continuing his education. He worked for high-circulation newspapers such as "Hürriyet", "Posta", and "Sabah", as well as for other publications like "Star", "Ekspres", "Tasvir", "Tercüman", and "Yeni İstanbul".The primary aim of this study is to explore Rauf Tamer's life, journalism career, and ideas in detail, highlighting his contributions to the history of Turkish press. The analysis focuses on how Tamer maintained his journalistic activities during periods of intense political conflict between the left and right in Turkey, and his role during these times. Additionally, the study investigates the relationship between the conservative tendencies and right-wing views evident in Tamer's writings and the political events of the period. By examining Tamer's journalistic activities and ideas, this research aims to provide a significant reference for other studies in the field.Furthermore, the thesis addresses Tamer's stance and professional ethics during events such as the Egebank scandal in the 2000s, where he was eventually acquitted. Rauf Tamer began his journalism career in 1959 and continued writing until his death. He witnessed and reported on political events from the 1960s to the 2000s, noted for his conservative and right-wing perspective. Although implicated in the Egebank scandal in the 2000s, Tamer was later exonerated. During this period, he left Sabah newspaper and paused his career until his name was cleared. He last served as the chief columnist at Posta newspaper, and after writing his final column titled "Lanetleyerek" ("Cursing"), he passed away at the age of 86 from a heart attack at his home. The death of Rauf Tamer has created a significant void in the journalism community. He will be remembered for his contributions to the history of Turkish journalism and his dedication to his profession.
