Reliving the past, recovering the future: Representation of Ottoman captivity in "historiographic metafiction" of Pamuk, Galanaki and Bajac

The aim of this thesis is to highlight the value of ?historiographic metafiction? as a postmodern novel in reflecting the transnational features of the Ottoman captivity theme in Orhan Pamuk?s The White Castle, Rhea Galanaki?s The Life of Ismail Ferik Pasha, Vladislav Bajac?s Hamam Balkania and the genre?s peaceful characteristics of humanistic considerations. This study also suggests an interdisciplinary study among literature, history and literary theories to question the influence of the captivity literature on different disciplines and its effect of creating the oriental discourses in historical representations as the realistic discipline and the literary texts as the experienced records of captivity. By this way, the thesis emphasizes the importance of captivity theme of historiographic metafiction, which could shape future?s collective memory of today?s societies with the influence of empathy.Keywords: captivity theme, captivity literature, captive, historiographic metafiction, the Ottomans, history,
