Abstract (EN)
For long years the role of motivation in foreign language teaching has been a controversial issue in our country. At the same time, one of the problems encountered in foreign language courses is the motivation problem. Because the most important factor that affects academic success is motivation. Most researchers have defended the idea that if motivation level increases, foreign language learning level increases too and students learn foreign language easier. At the same time, researchers supported their claims with their studies. The research was conducted to test the validity of the thesis and be useful to the educators with the help of the findings. In this research, motivation attitudes of state and private secondary school students in foreign language courses in Turkey were examined. At the same time, the relationship between foreign language and motivation attitude of state and private secondary school students was tried to be determined. For this reason, two different types of schools, especially state and private, were selected. The population of the study consisted of data obtained from 747 students with Random Sampling from Çukurova Özel Çözüm Secondary School and Seyhan Kasım Sacide Ener Secondary School 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th grade students in Adana central district. The Survey Method was used as a data collection tool. In the research, the participants were applied the Academic Motivation Scale-AMS and there was a significant effect on the motivation of different school (State and Private) type, gender, school and primary school (5, 6, 7 and 8th grade) was not examined. The difference between motivation levels of the students in private and public schools was tried to be determined. In the study, Pearson Product Moment Correlation Coefficiency and Independent Sample t-Test Analysis were performed by using Statistical Package for Social Sciences-SPSS 22 Programme. According to the results, it was found that the motivation level differred according to the gender and school type (state and private school). In the light of the data obtained, it was found that motivation is the most important factor in foreign language learning. In addition, a variety of strategies should be developed by using different methods and tools to maintain motivation. In this study, the relationship between types of school and motivation attitudes of public and private secondary school students in the English course was examined. When the findings obtained from the study were examined, it was observed that male students who were educated in public schools had higher scores than female students in the dimensions of "Intrinsic Motivation For Success-IMFS", and "Stimulation Intrinsic Motivation For Life-SIMFL" and "Internally Motivated External Motivation-IMEM" dimensions. It was found that this difference reached the level of significance by "t-Test Analysis". However, it was found that there was not a significant difference between the state and private secondary school students in the dimensions of "Inner Motivation For Knowledge-IMFK", "Determined External Motivation-DEM", "External Motivation External Regulation-EMER" and "Motivationless-M". It was examined whether motivation attitudes of the students in state and private secondary schools differred according to the type of school in which students graduated from primary school. According to the results obtained; in the "Motivationlessness-M" dimension, secondary school students who graduated from private school received higher scores than those who graduated from state school, and t-Test Analysis showed that this difference reached the significance level. However, with the type of school in which students graduated from primary school, "Intrinsic Motivation For Knowing-IMFK", "Intrinsic Motivation For Success-IMFS", "Intrinsic Motivation For Stimulation-IMFS", "Intrinsic Motivation To Know-IMTK". There was not a significant difference between the state and private school students in terms of "External Motivation External Regulation-EMER" dimensions. Correlation Analysis was conducted to determine whether motivation attitudes of the state and private secondary school students differed according to the relationship between the level of motivation and the level of motivation in the English lesson students who attends private schools. According to the results of the Pearson Product Moment Correlation Coefficiency Analysis, there is a negative relationship between the grade level of secondary school students studying in private schools and "Intrinsic Motivation to Know-IMTK", "Intrinsic Motivation For Success-IMFS", "Intrinsic Motivation For Success-IMFS" and "Intrinsic Motivation For Reflection-IMFR" a relationship was determined. However, there was not a significant relationship between the grade level of students in state and private schools in the "Internal Motivation-IM", "Determined External Motivation-DEM", "External Motivation-External Regulation-EMER" and "Motivationlessness-M" dimensions.
