The role of recovery experiences on effects of emotional labor

There are increasing empirical findings related to the effects of emotional labor on both workers (job satisfaction, burnout, etc.) and work-related (performance, salary, etc.) outcomes. However, some of these studies have empathized negative effects of emotional labor and some of them have provided positive or non-significant effects of emotional labor. Thus, there is a need to conduct new researches which focus on discovering moderator and mediator factors that can influence emotional labor strategies and workers and work-related outcomes. In this context, the current study was designed to test the role of recovery experiences between emotional labor strategies with a new conceptualization and related outcomes. As individuals have longer working hours in their work lives, their needs to recover themselves have also increased. The recovery process might change the outcomes of emotional labor. For this purpose, we conducted this study including 366 employees in order to investigate the effect of different emotional labor strategies (PA / NA Felt, PA / NA Suppressing, PA / NA Amplifying) on well- being, job satisfaction and emotional exhaustion levels of employees with multiple and hierarchical regression analysis. Followingly, 6 different models were tested with path analysis by using AMOS in an attempt to reveal the role of recovery experiences. Consequently, results have shown that new conceptualization of emotional labor demonstrated differentiation between positive and negative conditions and also it provides the importance of "felt" dimension. Additionally, we found that recovery experiences may have an impact on the path between emotional labor and outcomes. The findings are discussed in relation to the theoretical background. Lastly, the limitations and theoretical implications were provided.
