Rumi types and Rumi elements used in Rüstem Pasha Mosque tiles

This study aims to examine the rumi motifs and rumi decorative elements found in Rüstem Pasha Mosque, one of the significant architectural works of Ottoman architecture. Within the scope of the research, the types of rumi motifs, compositional schemes, and application techniques used in the mosque's decorative program have been analyzed in detail. Based on the findings, important insights have been obtained regarding the characteristics of rumi motif usage, particularly in the tile-covered sections of the mosque. All designs featuring rumi motifs were documented through vector drawings and diagrammed photographic illustrations. Rumi motifs hold a prominent place in the majority of the ornamental elements within the structure. These motifs appear in varying densities across different architectural components such as walls, spandrels, the mihrab façade, and pendentives. Rumi motifs are commonly featured in decorative elements such as modular tiles, borders, panels, pendentives, and corner fillers. It has been determined that approximately 80% of the tile decorations in the mosque consist of tiles featuring rumi motifs. Specifically, rumi designs appear in 70% of the border tiles, 85% of the pendentives, and 80% of the spandrel tiles. Among the types of rumi motifs examined in the study, sade rumi is the most frequently used, followed by hurde rumi, while bezemeli rumi appears more sparingly. Sarılma rumi was encountered in only a single panel. In terms of color preferences, cobalt blue was identified as the most commonly used color, while red was frequently applied in inner details and green appeared more rarely. This thesis aims to highlight the significance of rumi motifs in the Ottoman tile art tradition through the example of Rüstem Pasha Mosque and to offer guidance for how these motifs can be adapted in contemporary designs in accordance with traditional design principles.
