Translation criticism on the example of "Die Madonna im Pelzmantel", the German translation of Sabahattin Ali's Madonna in Fur Coat

When we look at the beginnings of translation studies, we see that they date back to Ancient Greece and Rome. Since the beginning of human history, people have interacted, influenced and been influenced by each other for various reasons. The spread of humanity to different geographies, the diversification of languages and the subsequent cultural activities such as war, trade and agreements have brought together different cultures among people who speak different languages and created the necessity for people to understand and accept each other. The translation of literary works, on the other hand, brings into our lives gains such as recognizing and understanding works that are the products of societies' thought structures, cultures, history, perceptions of life, traditions and customs, and being respectful to different societies and ideas. Thanks to literary translations, it is easy to understand foreign culture and people, to recognize the richness of expression of different subjects in the globalizing world through different literary genres, and new genres, rhetoric and works that will contribute to local literature emerge. Translating the literary works of our own culture into other languages is important in terms of introducing our own culture to the world, understanding the richness of our literary world and reflecting our culture to other cultures. Sabahattin Ali's "Madonna with a Fur Coat" has been translated into different languages, entered the bestseller list in world literature, and has become one of the works whose fame has gone beyond its age and whose readership is increasing day by day. In this study, the German translation of The Madonna in the Fur Coat, "Die Madonna im Pelzmantel", will be analyzed within the framework of literary translation criticism, and the linguistic and cultural elements of the work will be emphasized.
