Basic virtues in Safahat: Wisdom, chastity, courage and justice

One of the most important issues of Islamic moral philosophy is the issue of 'virtue'. Philosophers have tried to determine the basic virtues to be possessed while searching for the ways that will lead people to happiness and have determined the concepts of 'wisdom, chastity, courage and justice' as the basic virtues. The importance of moral education is gradually increasing in terms of perfecting the human spirit and ensuring the unity and integrity of the society. In this sense, it is important to investigate the moral codes of our own world of thought and culture. Mehmet Âkif Ersoy is a person who takes place in our contemporary thought history with his ideas apart from Turkish Literature. He used his art as a tool for the salvation of the country by experiencing the depressive periods of the Turkish people himself; He collected his ideas and thoughts in his work named Safahat. It is hoped that philosophical ethics-based studies on Safahat, which has a wide readership by making use of the relationship between literature and philosophy, will contribute to the field. In the study, the virtues of wisdom, chastity, courage and justice, which are based on Islamic moral philosophy, were traced in Safahat; By making use of Safahat's literary power, it has been tried to reveal the reflections of these virtues on our world of emotions and thoughts and our practical life. Mehmet Akif's; When his thoughts on god, man and the universe were examined, it was understood that he had a philosophy of life based on the will and responsibility of man. While the virtue of chastity is mostly used with the meaning of compassion, one of its sub-virtues, in Safahat; The concept of justice, on the other hand, has taken place with the meaning of the independence of the nation and the establishment of the right. It is hoped that philosophical ethics-based studies on Safahat, which has a wide readership by making use of the relationship between literature and philosophy, will contribute to the interdisciplinary field.
