Discrepancies in the transmission of the Shāfiʿī school between Al-Buwayṭī and Al-Muzanī in their Mukhtaṣars: The case of acts of worship

The contributions of Buwayti and Muzani, prominent students of Imam alShafi'i, hold significant importance in the transmission of the Shafi'i school's jurisprudential views. This study critically examines the differences of opinion in the works of both scholars titled al-Muhtasar, which have not yet been translated into Turkish. Focusing predominantly on issues of worship, a comparative analysis of the works is conducted to identify both differences in the transmitted narrations from Imam al-Shafi'i and disagreements arising from the authors' personal jurisprudential preferences. The first chapter of this study explores the biographical backgrounds, scholarly profiles, and places of Buwayti and Muzani within the madhhab, followed by a comparative assessment of the structure and content of their works, al-Muhtasar. The second chapter systematically analyzes the juridical disagreements on issues of worship such as ablution, prayer, zakat, fasting, and pilgrimage, presenting after each section the authoritative positions upheld within the Shafi'i school. In this study, 46 disagreements in the works of Buwayti and Muzani were identified and these disagreements were evaluated in the conclusion.
