Violence in health sector: An investigation on news

Violence is one of the social mechanisms that can be encountered in every aspect of our lives. On the other hand, health institutions are one of the most occupied areas of violence. Because health care is a service sector that requires direct care. The primary objective of healthcare workers is to provide quality service to patients. Health professionals who want to realize this aim; patients, their relatives, suppliers and colleagues in business life. For this reason, there is no single source of violence in health institutions. It is possible to say that print media is an important field of representation in understanding and explaining violence in health in the context of being a public problem. Violence news, which is defined as a sectoral problem and arises as a result of the relationship between patients and health workers, becomes an important news object for the print media. In this study, Hürriyet, Milliyet and Cumhuriyet newspapers were examined to determine the news of violence against health workers. In order to analyze the data, the existing archives of the Hürriyet, Milliyet and Cumhuriyet newspapers on the official website were re-accessed. In the research, a total of 501 newspapers of Hürriyet, Milliyet and Cumhuriyet newspapers covering daily violence on health published between January 1, 2017 and May 21, 2019 were reached. 143 of the newspaper news items cover ‟ violence against health ‟, while 358„ ‟news that react to health violence‟. In order to analyze the collected data, it was loaded into the MAXQDA 2018 qualitative data analysis program and analyzed through descriptive statistical methods. In the qualitative data analysis program MAXQDA 2018, content analysis was evaluated and the findings were interpreted by thematic coding. According to the results of the study, prevalence of violence against health workers to newspaper reports, Turkey similar to those found in studies to be able to reflect the general is quite high. Therefore, in order to prevent violence in health; necessary legal arrangements should be made, educational support should be provided and all units in the organizational sense should be coordinated.
