Blood group and whole blood count parameters have been shown to be related to clinicopathological events in many studies. However, in our literatüre review no study investigating the variability of mean corpuscular volume (MCV), mean platelet volume (MPV), and red cell distribution width (RDW), which are the parameters of complete blood count, according to age and gender, and its relationship with ABO blood group. In this study, the relationship between ABO blood group and MCV, MPV and RDW was investigated as the primary goal. As a secondary goal, it was examined whether MCV, MPV and RDW varied according to age and gender. In this study, age, sex, complete blood count parameters and ABO blood group distributions of 1619 healthy donors aged 18-65 years who applied to Fırat University Hospital Blood Center between 2016-2018 were analyzed retrospectively. Blood group determination and whole blood counting were performed with automatic devices. Blood groups and blood counts of all donors were studied with the same type and brand devices. SPSS statistical program was used to evaluate the study data. Chi-square test was used to compare the qualitative data and 95% confidence interval and p<0.05 significance level. The average age of 1619 patients included in the study was 36.77. The youngest age was 20 and the oldest was 65. 1050 (64.9%) of the patients were under 40 years old, 569 (35.1%) were over 40 years old. 1360 (84%) of the patients were male and 259 (16%) were female. There were 157 (9,7%) people with 0 Rh (-) blood group, 255 (15,8%) with 0 Rh (+) blood group, 205 (12,7%) with A Rh (-) blood group, 252 (15,6%) with A Rh (+) blood group, 193 (11,9%) with B Rh (-) blood group, 226 (14%) with B Rh (+) blood group, 100 (6,2%) with AB Rh (- blood group and 231 (14,3%) with AB Rh (+) blood group. The leukocyte minimum value was 2500/mm3, the highest was 20.300/mm3 and the median value was 7.600/mm3. The lowest value of hemoglobin was 5,1 gr/dl, the highest was 19,3 gr/dl and the median value was 15,7 gr/dl. The lowest value of hematocrit was 17,3%, the highest was 61,3% and the median value was 46,8%. The lowest platelet value was 16.000/mm3, the highest was 545.000/mm3 and the median value was 235.000/mm3. The lowest MCV value was 58,6 fL, the highest was 103,2 fL and the median value was 87,3 fL. The lowest MPV value was 5,9 fL, the highest was 13,9 fL and the median value was 8,4 fL. The RDW lowest value was 10.53%, the highest was 25.1% and the median value was 13.2%. Variability between complete blood count parameters (MCV, MPV and RDW) and age, gender and blood groups were examined. There was no significant relationship between MCV and MPV and age. RDW value was significantly higher in the group above 40 years of age. There was no significant relationship between MCV and MPV and gender. RDW value was significantly higher in women. There was no significant relationship between MCV, MPV and RDW and blood groups. A Rh (+) and AB Rh (+) blood groups were significantly higher in male gender, AB Rh (-) blood group in female gender. There was no significant difference between blood groups and age. In our study, a significant relationship was found between some basic complete blood count parameters and age and gender. However, no significant relationship was found between blood groups, MCV, MPV and RDW, which are the primary aims of this study. Only RDW value was higher in women and in the group over 40 years old. It is not possible to say whether this has a clinical reflection or not at this stage. However, further studies are needed to support the theory of the relationship between blood groups and blood count parameters. Key Words: ABO bood group system, MCV, MPV, RDW
