A systematic review of violence in health studies

A SYSTEMATIC REVIEW ON VIOLENCE RESEARCH IN HEALTH The news of violence in health is encountered more and more every day. Health workers who are exposed to violence while performing their profession feel themselves under constant threat, experience uneasiness, decrease their motivation and increase the feeling of burnout. Violence in health affects not only healthcare professionals, but also other patients and their relatives, as well as the healthcare system. The aim of this study is to examine the postgraduate thesis studies on the phenomenon of violence in health, which has increased significantly in recent years in Turkey, with a systematic compilation method; to highlight the common conclusions about the type, causes, consequences and realization of violence. It will be important to understand the issue of violence in health in detail, so that decisions and policies on this issue are based on scientific data. The scope of the research consisted of 15 postgraduate theses, which were selected according to the inclusion and exclusion criteria and were granted access by the National Thesis Center. The findings show that healthcare workers are exposed to violence at a high rate at least once. The most common type of violence is verbal violence, followed by physical violence. Male healthcare workers were more exposed to physical violence, while female healthcare workers were more exposed to verbal violence. Cases of violence experienced within health institutions are mostly experienced in emergency services and polyclinics. Perpetrators of violence are mostly men and their relatives. Reasons for resorting to violence seem to be related to issues such as unfair demands of patients and their relatives, long waiting times, communication problems, and dissatisfaction with treatment. The reporting rate of complaints is lower than the rate of exposure to violence. Implemented health policies; The media's misdirection of society, the failure of legal and administrative processes to produce effective results regarding violence are the main factors that increase violence.
