Investigation of Sakarya city place names in terms of folklore

Since the first periods of history, man has needed to name his place in order to perceive his environment more easily. With this need, the way to establish a healthy communication has been opened. With the facilitation of communication, the universe of meanings has also expanded. Human beings, who started to make sense of their environment, reinforced this with naming. These naming cannot be considered separately from social memory due to the transport of cultural memory. The names given around the tradition have also created various narratives. In the axis of these narratives, in a way, they fed the folkloric elements of their own society. With the increase in population, diversified societies brought with it limitation. These people, who drew a border for themselves, gave a name to their homeland. The need for naming has a rather complex cultural background. A nation with its toponymy studies; It can be learned about many elements such as perception, thinking, customs, traditions and customs, public imagination, wishes and history. In this study, on the axis of the narratives created about the Sakarya province, district and village (neighborhood) names; It has been tried to determine the cultural contexts, experiences, economic structure, sensitivity in defining the geography, the way of keeping the history alive, beliefs and beliefs, the connections between the variants depending on the population, with the help of interviews with the source people. This work consists of three parts. As a result of the research, it is possible to give place names for Names of Persons, Place Names Related to the Appearance and Structure of Geographic Objects, Place Names Related to Lake - Stream - Stream and Spring Names, Place Names Related to the Outer Appearance of Geographical Objects, Place Names Based on Occupational Names. turned out to be the most used elements.
