Protecting spatial memory in industry buildings about of the art and space relationship

Art and space is a form of creative expression and communication based on a design. The relationship between art and space; It starts with the need for shelter, which is the most basic need of humanity and the idea of perfecting space brings art and space together. The development of art is one of the greatest indicators of human history. At the beginning of the 20th century, Marcel Duchamp emphasized, that thinking is more important than the content of art and it brings with it an understanding of contemporary art. In addition, art and space are a mirror of interdisciplinary interaction and contemporaryart. Industrial production and related developments take an important place in the life of community around the world. Industrial buildings, that have lost their main function and importance over time and are abandoned, causing visual pollution in their surroundings. They can even be destroyed by increasing rent pressure. Many industrial buildings are located in or at the edge of cities and are not used for changing technological, ecological, economic or social reasons. They are documented and placed under protection. The old industrial buildings, supported by international nature and culture conservation organizations and UNESCO and converted into exhibition and museum areas, are read with the help of indicators and transmit this common heritage to future generations. One of the best examples in this regard is the Völklingen Ironworks in Germany, one of the most important industrial plants in its history. Coal, steel and iron have shaped the economic and cultural structure of the German industrial region of Saarland for 250 years and have always played a pioneering role as an area that also carries out R&D studies on conversion and tests innovations. In this study, the most successful example of conversion from an industrial city and its structure to an art and culture center and museum as well as the UNESCO industrial heritage site Völklingen Ironworks are discussed. In emphasizing reuse, the focus is on their contribution to cultural sustainability as spatial memory, identity values and art spaces.
