The romantic movement in art and the analysis of the opera Der Fliegende Hollander(The Flying Dutchman) by Richard Wagner

This study analyses in detail the process of transition to the Romantic Period and the characteristics of the period, in which the classical form in works of art and the strict rules of stereotypes were overcome and the artists became freer. The artworks created in this period by artists in various branches, who started to assert that the inspiration coming from nature and human nature, emotions and thoughts are more valuable and that these emotions cannot be limited by any rules, rather than creating works in accordance with the rules of classical form, were mentioned; among these artists, the life of Richard Wagner, who was the most innovative in the field of performing arts, as well as the innovations he brought to opera, such as the concepts of 'Gesamtkunstwerk' and 'Leitmotive', were analyzed under the light of his opera work The Flying Dutchman. In addition to his own life experiences, Wagner also wrote and composed the libretto of the opera The Flying Dutchman, inspired by a sailor story from the 1800s, at the same time, he also dealt with how the opposite sexes see each other in male-female relationships and the saving power of love and affection in human life. It is aimed that this study will be a clear and useful guide both for the art students and for curious individuals who want to get informed, with detailed descriptions of the transition to the Romantic Period and the 19th century understanding of art, Richard Wagner's life and examinations of the aforementioned opera work.
