Abstract (EN)

The Investigation of Therapeutic Effects of Edaravone on Experimentally Induced Rat Model of Endometriosis by Histologic and Cytokine Parameters . Purpose: In this study the effects of edaravone treatment on experimantally induced rat model of endometriosis is investigated by histologic methods and cytokine evaluation. Material and method: After endometriosis has been induced in 12 rats experimentally, they are divided into two groups. 20 mg/kg/day of edaravone has been applied for 28 days to the first group of 6 rats. To the control group 1 ml/kg/day isotonic saline solution has been applied for the same period. At the end of the treatment period the abdomens have been explored. Peritoneal washing and blood samples were obtained. The implants were excised, their sizes were recorded and histologically examined. TNFalpha and VEGF levels were measured in blood samples and peritoneal washings. Results: Mean implant size is 32.1 ± 8.06 mm3 in the control group before the treatment and 61.5 ± 13.6 mm3 at the end of the treatment. In the edaravone group the mean implant size is 28.3 ± 4.4 mm3 before the treatment and 16.8 ± 4.7 mm3 at the end of the treatment. The epithelial score is 2.5 ± 0.22 in the saline group. The epithelium is moderately conserved in the cross sections. In the edaravone group the epithelial score is 1.5 ± 0.2 and epithelium is partially conserved. In the saline group VEGF levels is 147.8 ± 27.9 pg/ml in the serum and 69.3 ± 17.01 pg/ml in the peritoneal washings. In edaravone group VEGF levels is 18.1 ± 7.9 pg/ml in the serum and 29.2 ± 5.2 pg/ml in the peritoneal washings. In the saline group TNF-alfa levels is 47.9 ± 6.8 pg/ml in the serum and 26.5 ± 4.8 pg/ml in the peritoneal washings. In edaravon group TNF-alfa levels is 41.91 ± 6.5 pg/ml in the serum and 14.3 ± 1.7 pg/ml in the peritoneal washings. Conclusion: In edaravone group significant decrease was detected in both the implant size and the levels of cytokines in the serum and peritoneal washings. In the light of these findings edaravone seems an efficient molecule that may have some potential in the treatment of endometriosis. Key words: Endometriosis, rat, edaravone.
