Özet (TR)

In order to shed light on the clinical review of metoprolol treatment used for cardiac and hypertensive problems in epilepsy patients, this study aims to reveal whether the effects of metoprolol on epileptic activity are proconvulsant or anticonvulsant. Fourteen Sprague-Dawley male rats were divided into 2 groups, 7 in each group. A single dose of penicillin (500 IU 2.5 μL i.c.) and 0.9% saline (0.5 mL, i.p.) was administered to the first group SHAM group. A single dose of penicillin (500 IU 2.5 μL i.c.) and metoprolol (0.5 mL, 50 mg/kg i.p.) were administered to the second group of treatment group. Each rat was fixed with a stereotaxic device and ECoG recording was taken for 240 minutes with electrodes placed on brain tissue. Evaluation of the recording data was made on the frequency and amplitudes of the epileptic spikes. In 10-minute periods, the mean frequency was calculated as spike/min and the mean amplitude was calculated as μV and included in the statistics. Two independent groups, SHAM and treatment group, were statistically compared according to the average spike frequency and amplitude values in 10-minute periods and no statistically significant result was obtained. In conclusion, metoprolol did not cause any change in epileptic activity in the penicillin-induced epilepsy model. Keywords: Penicillin, epilepsy, metoprolol, rat.
