Ceramics stoves

The continuation of human life depends on meeting physiological needs by fighting against environmental factors. Heating up is one of these needs, and it is a value that a person opposes to nature, can stand against with recieving from it, and creates comfort. With the discovery of fire, mankind who created tools to use its energy in their favour, turned their houses into warm homes with these tools. One of these tolls is stoves and they are one of the most used heating tools in the past. The first examples of stoves, which provided more efficient heating compared to the tools used before, were made of clay, a material that nature presented us. Wheelthrown cup, bowl, cylinder-like forms were embedded in the walls of adobe stoves to store heat, and these models became the ancestors of ceramic stoves. The first examples of ceramic stoves had seen in Europe at the beginning of the 13th century, have also developed in this continent and spread all over the world. The stove industry has developed rapidly in cold zone countries. Producers, who are strict followers of the developments in the field of art, added artistic value to ceramic stoves by producing in the styles of that period. 18th-19th century, when ceramic stoves were most popular, they were brought to Turkey with the Western orientation seen in the Ottoman Dynasty and palaces were the first places where ceramic stoves were used. Today, the stoves in the palaces with rich collections and in the private collections have been documented and a resource has been created. As a result of this research, it was concluded that the aesthetic values of the ceramic stoves in the collections can be considered as a basis for new designs beside the heating function.
