Özet (EN)
Sergei Prokofiev?s ballet Romeo and Juliet is set in palace life, the political center of Renaissance period. It tells a love story that has been influenced by the social values of the Renaissance period. Lavrovksy?s choreography of this ballet is a blend of Italy?s Renaissance period court dances, folkloric Russian dance steps and classical ballet. The choreographic organization and ordering used in other classical ballet works. For instance, the back to back ordering of ?pas de deuw?, ?variation? and ?coda? is absent. The masked and wigged ball scenes display dance steps from the very beginnings of ballet. In other scenes, sometimes without regard to classical ballet moves, yet freely adapting to them at other times, several types of ballet moves have been combined. The demi-classical choreography of which this work is generally comprised, allows opportunity for the dancers to reflect their essences onto their roles. Consequently, a ballet freely danced with rich expression brings about a trajic ending. Nevertheless, there versions with happy endings S. Prokofiev composed this work by utilising syntax and lyrical aspects characteristic of Neoclassicism. Soviet authorities harshly criticised Prokofiev?s Romeo and Juliet for its individualistic compositional style. It was difficult for Prokofievto convince the Russian ballet theatres to accept his Romeo and Juliet. After the success of its first staging in Czechoslovakia in 1938, this work proved itself by reaching a wide audince in Russia at its staging with Leonid Lavrovsky?s choreography on October 11, 1940.
