Digitization and comparative analysis of spatial organizations of houses designed by Seyfi Arkan and Sedad Hakki Eldem

Sedad Hakkı Eldem and Seyfi Arkan, who have an important place in the history of Turkish architecture, exhibit very different attitudes in terms of style, especially with their architectural approaches towards housing designs. Arkan's primary goal was to achieve a modernist architectural education and practice developed in Western societies while Eldem's orientation was to apply an architectural understanding acquired from local and traditional principles to the architecture of the modern republic. It is imperative that a topological examination be carried out in order to demonstrate whether this difference in formality continues in the spatial organization of the buildings. In this study, space syntax method that found out by Hillier and Hanson (1984) was used to examine the designs of both architects in topological detail. The study consists of five titles. In the first part; A brief briefing on the architectural approaches of Seyfi Arkan and Sedad Hakkı Eldem was made. Additionally, the importance and the aim of this study was emphasized. In the second part; Details of Seyfi Arkan and Sedad Hakkı Eldem's architectural life were given. In addition, the emergence of the space syntax method is explained and its purpose, benefits and relation with the house are defined. In the third part; information was given about the houses of these two architects used in this study. It is also explained how the method of space syntax is applied in the houses. In the fourth part; findings obtained from the houses where the space syntax method is applied are presented. It has been determined that transition spaces are the most integrated spaces of Seyfi Arkan's houses, where the effects of the modernist approach are seen in all designs, in the calculations made by this method. When the values obtained from the houses designed by Sedad Hakkı Eldem were examined, the effects of the periodically changing tendency of the architect were seen. In some of the Eldem houses, the most integrated spaces were the sofa and the garden as in the traditional residential planning, while the most integrated spaces with modernist influences were the transitional spaces in some housesThe findings presented are also discussed. In the fifth part; fictional information in the background of the appearance of Seyfi Arkan and Sedad Eldem's housing designs was explained and suggestions for the future were made in order to create a knowledge base for developing housing design.
