Zero waste management: Example of Marmara University Anadoluhisarı Campus

With the rapid increase of the population living in the world and the increase in limited resource consumption, waste management has started to gain importance rapidly. With the increase in waste production, waste management policies have started to be implemented. Today, in Turkey and worldwide "Zero Waste Management" has become an important environmental policy. The Zero Waste Regulation study with the Zero Waste Regulation (12.07.2019 date ve 30829 numbered) which has been first put into practice in the Environment and Urban Ministry building and the Presidency of the Republic of Turkey in Turkey has been made mandatory for all public institutions and organizations till the 31.12.2020. In the thesis study which has been started before the regulation has become obligatory the viability of the Zero Waste Regulation has been demonstrated within the Marmara University Anadoluhisarı Campus. In the first part of this thesis, the purpose and content of the study are presented in the introductory part of the study. In the second part, the concepts of sustainability and circular economy are explained and evaluated through waste management. Meanwhile, by explaining the Zero Waste administration as a theory examples and legislations related to zero waste administration from the world and Turkey were given. In the third part of the study, By giving information about the field where the study was conducted, information about how the study was carried out, the data collection tools and the methods used in that study are explained. In the fourth section, the results of the surveys applied to the students, academic and administrative staff on campus for the purpose of training and awareness raising on total and discrete waste collected before and after zero waste management and zero waste management are presented. In the light of the findings obtained, the amount of waste collected on campus was 193,20 g / person. While the current study was carried out, the amount of waste collected was 295,54 g / person. day. While all waste (100%) was non-recyclable before zero waste management, with the application, 69% of the recyclable waste was separated, and the amount of non-recyclable waste was reduced to 31%. The dicrete waste collected from the campus consisted of 9%glass,11% paper, 35% metal/plastic and 14% organic waste. In the survey study which is an awareness measurement study, 65% of the academic staff, 51% of the administrative staff and 49% of the students answered the question "Do you have any information about Zero Waste Management" as "Partially". Another question, "Is Zero Waste Management implemented on campus?" Although the answer to the question is "Yes" by the academic (37%) and administrative (41%) staff constitutes the main questions of the thesis, the environmental sensitivities and attitudes of the students towards environmental policies were analyzed along with the other questions from the questionnaire. The zero waste management study in which public policy analysis was conducted was developed with a top-down application model during the implementation of the policy and the success status; it is concluded that he hopes to shed light on other studies.
