Abstract (EN)
Majolica is a soft earthenware, fired to the biscuit and decorated over a glaze. The name ?Majolica? comes from Spain?s island of Majorca, where the technique was introduced and moved to Italy in 13th century. The Reneissance, from Italian Rinascimento, re- meaning "again" and nascere meaning "be born", was the cultural movement spanned 14th to the 16th century that encompassed a revival of learning based on classical resources. With the creative impact of Reneissance, Italy reached to a level of awareness of esthetic. Consequently, Majolica was related to Italy both through style and technique. Starting from Tuscany, majolica production spreaded all over Italy. In addition to metropolitan areas, ceramic education and majolica production took place in smaller cities and towns.Sicily, the largest island in the Mediterranean Sea which is directly adjacent to Italy via the Strait of Messina, was an important area for majolica production. In recent years, research has been expedited to emphasize the amazing beauity of introductory majolica pieces. The most important majolica production centers of Sicily have been determined as Palermo, Caltegirone, Trapani, Sciaacca and Burgio located near Sciacca. Because of the fast pace of artists and constant alteration of their ideas, it has been difficult to separate their work from each other. Some areas are still waiting for their history to be revealed. In this study, a research on ?Majolica Decorations of Sicily Area in Reneissance Period? has been conducted. The following three techniques were implemented in today?s conditions: Application of coloring pigments, Application of coperta technique, Application of colored glaze on glaze.
