Evaluation of the effect of smoking on periodontaldisease and gingival crevicular fluid pentraxin 3, il-1βand VEGF levels of individuals

Smoking is an important risk factor that plays a role in the degree, severity and prevalence of periodontal diseases. The aim of our study is to evaluate the effects of smoking on DOS PTX3, IL-1β and VEGF levels of periodontal healthy and periodontitis patients and to compare the levels of markir in periodontal health and periodontitis. A total of 80 patients, including 40 periodontal healthy patients (20 smokers (P-,S+) and 20 non-smokers (P-,S-)) and 40 patients with periodontitis (20 smokers (P+,S+) and 20 non-smokers (P+,S-)), were included in our study. Demographic data of each group were taken and clinical periodontal evaluations were performed. Finally, the gingival crevicular fluid was collected from the individuals and biochemical and statistical analyses were performed. According to the findings of our study, there was no statistically significant difference in clinical periodontal parameters between the smoking and non-smoking groups. The average PTX3 value in the smoking periodontal healthy group was found to be statistically significantly lower compared to the non-smoking periodontal healthy and smoking periodontitis groups.The level of IL-1β was found to be significantly higher in individuals with periodontitis who smoked compared to the periodontal healthy groups and the non-smoking periodontitis group. There was no statistically significant difference between VEGF levels in smokers and non-smokers with periodontal healthy individuals.
