An empirical study on adoptation of privately contracted armed security personnel to shipping

Throughout the history, corsair and maritime piracy have changed as a result counter-measures have evolved accordingly. Perhaps one of the most important measures has beeen taken against maritime piracy in the last decade the use of Privately Contracted Armed Maritime Security Personnel (the PCAMSP). Specialization of the PCAMSP is not a profession on its own, rather mostly people who has worked in the armed forces and/or law enforcement agencies of different countries. The PCAMSP's adoptation to the discipline which is the basis of maritime and how they have/will evaluate maritime as a professional career, to work in harmony and cooperation with the other personnel on board, whether they are fit to act as hierarchical on the ship. Also how they have/will emotionally influenced from working away from their families, friends and loved ones, which is the nature of maritime. It is very important for them to be able to keep up with the business conditions and to be suitable for the physical conditions. The adoptation of the PCAMSP to maritime assignment is very important in terms of increasing the efficiency also selecting the right fit for the job will result in the highest quality security service. The aim of this study is;determining the factors contributing to the maritime orientation of the PCAMSP and contributing to the selection/hiring process of the PCAMSP. A descriptive and exploratory study was carried out for these purposes. As a method a research question was created, demographic information from the survey staff of 125 PCAMSP, answers to questions about maritime perception and other confidential data were collected by open-ended questions, validity and reliability tests were applied to the questionnaire and the collected data sets were subjected to parametric and nonparametric analyzes in SPSS version 24 program. As a result of the analysis of the data; it has been observed that the adoptation of PCAMSP to maritime sector can be evaluated under 6 sub-dimensions (Career, Collaboration and Compliance, Personality Conformity, Emotional, Business Conditions, Physical Conditions). A significant difference was observed between the PCAMSP' military history as a profession and career sub-dimension, a significant and negative relationship between personelity conformity sub-dimension, a significant and positive relationship between collaboration and compliance sub-dimension. A significant differences between PCAMSP who worked on board before with work conditions and emotional sub-dimensions. A significant difference was found between the experience of conflict with the pirates and the sub-dimension of personality conformity. There were significant differences between the educational status of the PCAMSP and job conditions and emotional sub-dimensions. When the relations between the sub-dimensions of maritime orientations were examined, no correlation was found between personelity conformity and emotional sub-dimensions. A significant and negative relationship was observed between the collabortaion and compliance and business conditions sub- dimensions. In the answers given to the open-ended questions, the cooperation between the PCAMSP and ship personnel which affect the most positively the most in the sea was observed, while the family-longing and away from family were the most influential variable in the negative direction.
