A case of reproduction in contemporary arts within framework of simulation theory

ABSTRACTThis thesis includes examination of the simulacra that reshape the contemporary art, for its development of relation with art at the state of reproduction. This study aims to examine status of contemporary art, understand how it reached its present position, and to examine formation of reproduction re-shaped with effect of poststructuralist thinkers such as Gilles Deleuze, Roland Barthes, Julia Kristeva emphasizing simulacra, copy, original, authentic, and citation concepts and from data at simulation theory of Jean Baudrillard, and making its presence felt at postmodern art. If there is no reality in postmodern period, what are the sources of elements creating work of art? How the reproduction and original relation is positioned at the moment that technologic developments provide mechanical reproduction opportunity? Is it possible to qualify copies as authentic when they become original? Do the artists want to appropriate syles of the past in order that they miss the reality eliminated by simulacra? Does the art become reality itself once an object is presented as ready work of art?An ordinary object which is presented by Marcel Duchamp in order to revolt against bourgeois appreciation arises to art status. It is turning point that Andy Warhol turned a commercial object so meta product, into work of art, and reproduct its copies of copies, and this ends the feature that distinguishes art from reality.The books of Baudrillard who states that hiperreality takes the place of reality in the world are mostly referred literature sources. In order to understand postmodernism, the modernist art and factors preparing changes occurred in art after 1960 have been studied. The code-based signs system has been searched within framework of cultural logic of capitalism that turns production-based policy into consumption-based policy.
