Investigation of different representations of masculinity in cinema: The case of Nuri Bilge Ceylan films

The aim of this study is to examine how different masculinities are constructed in the films of director Nuri Bilge Ceylan, who won many awards with his feature films and were successful in the international arena. While examining how different masculinity identities are constructed in Nuri Bilge Ceylan's films, the Discourse Analysis method was used. In the research, 8 of Nuri Bilge Ceylan's films were chosen as a sample. While analyzing the identities of the male characters in the movies, Raewyn Connell's four masculinity models (hegemonic masculinity, subaltern masculinity, collaborative masculinity and marginal masculinity) were taken as basis. The films examined in the research have enabled us to conclude that the different representations of masculinity in Nuri Bilge Ceylan's films are constructed with a hierarchical system. It has been seen that the representation of subaltern masculinity also has an important place in the films in which the hegemonic representation of masculinity takes place more than other masculinities. Conflicting representations of masculinity, rather than a dominant masculinity, were also determined in the films. It was observed that while Nuri Bilge includes different masculinities in his films, he presents his intellectual knowledge and worldview as well as reflecting the characteristics of the society in which he grew up.
