Abstract (EN)

Throughout the years, the online civic engagement tools have been gaining importance and bigger roles in improving the quality of everyday life. Petition based or awareness-raising campaigns have spread to the masses via social media tools. Some local governments started providing online local engagement tools to their citizens and some civic communities built their own tools. Either way, civic participation in governing, debates about local issues and the need for online civic engagement support will be increasing. Today, citizens discuss, debate, propose solutions about their city. However, there is still need for more engaging interactive civic tools for more effective, informative and inclusive discussions. While civic engagement tools have been developing in terms of user numbers by improved social media use or inclusion of geographical information systems for location based spotting of the discussion, a more integrated user centered design oriented approach is in need. This thesis presents and discusses a storytelling-based concept for online civic engagement. With this study the integration of location based urban information, social media use and the storytelling concept that brings together content from different sources, were explored to design a more effective interactive tool. The research approach was exploratory and user centered design methods were applied. As a result, a location based storytelling application for a better civic engagement experience is proposed. Keywords: Civic engagement, location based data, storytelling, interactive information design, concept creation, collective efficacy.
