Surgical treatment of scaphoid fractures and comparison of treatment results

Scaphoid is one of the 8 carpal bones in the wrist. The scaphoid, which is the most fractured carpal bone after trauma; It ranks second among upper extremity fractures after distal radius fractures. We assessed the surgical results of 47 patients who operated between the years of 2015 and 2020 from the scaphoid fracture. Only one of the 47 patients was female. While 32 patients had waist fractures, 10 had proximal fractures and 5 had distal fractures, respectively. Our patients who were followed-up were excluded from evaluation, and our patients who were regularly followed-up were evaluated with the MAYO scoring and QDASH scoring system, and their power and satisfaction status were evaluated. In particular, patients with a history of smoking and proximal pole fractures and waist fractures had worse outcomes compared to patients with distal pole fractures. The closed surgery group seemed more satisfied with the results than the open surgery group, and the range of motion was almost complete in examinations compared with the other wrist. It is very important to diagnose scaphoid fracture in the health center where the patient first applied after trauma because complications that may develop in the future will be more severe and the treatment procedures to be applied included a more aggressive process than patients with acutely diagnosed scaphoid fractures. If boiling is sufficient, physical therapy is an appropriate option for patients with poor postoperative range of motion.
