The investigation of relationship between classroom teachers' emotional intelligence and burnout levels

Abstract (EN)

In this study, the relationship between emotional intelligence and burnout of elementary classroom teachers' is aimed to be investigated by using various demographic properties. In the study, as data collection tools, with the aim of determining the emotional intelligence of classroom teachers Bar- On Emotional Intelligence Scale, with the aim of determining exhaustion cases Maslach Burnout Scale and with the aim of determining demographic properties( age, gender, marital status etc.) of teachers Personal Information Form were used. The reseach is a suitable quantitative study from survey models to relational screening model. In 2015-2016 school years, application of the surveys were provided by the researcher by randomly choosing seven different cities from seven regions of Turkey and by basing on approximately 100 classroom teachers and totally 700 classroom teachers from those cities 690 of the surveys were assessed. The cities where the research was performed are; Sakarya from the Marmara Region, Denizli from the Agean Region, Antalya from the Mediterranean Region, Ankara from the Central Anatolia Region, Rize from the Blacksea Region, Mardin from the southeastern Anatolia Region and Van from the Eastern Anatolia Region. In the research SPSS 21 packaged software was used in the analysis of quantitative data. With the aim of finding an answer to the main problem, by responding the sub problems of the research, various statistic tests such as arithmetic average standard deviation, regression, simple correlation, T-test, and variance analysis (ANOVA) were done. And Tukey Test was applied in order to find the origin of significant differences that belong to variables and to find which sub categories they stem from. According to the outcomes of the research, emotional intelligence which is the independent variable of the research was found to be the significant predictor on stress management, interpersonal relations, self-consciousness sub dimensions. And the burnout that is the dependent variable of the research was found to be the significant predictor on emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, self accomplishment and self failure. Moreover, marital status, age, the number of children, place of duty (city / center, district, village), and management experience variables were determined to create significant differences on the burnout of classroom teachers. However, age, the number of children, and place of duty variables were found to create significant differences on the emotional intelligences of classroom teachers. In the end of this research, various suggestions has been given to the teachers regarding their particular demographic categorizations.
