Teachers' perception of leadership and opinions on their expectations about of school administrators leadership behaviors

Abstract (EN)

Leadership behaviors of school administrators are a vital item for school. In recent years, changes on Turkish Education System and being applied in a different methods of administrations has caused to come out new ideas, meanwhile, primary school teachers expectations have changed. Perceptions of teachers' on leadership and changes on expectation from school administrators about behaviors of leadership interest politician, researchers and educators closely. The aim of this study is to examine profoundly teachers' perception of leadership and opinions on their expectations about of school administrators leadership behaviors. In this study was designed by using phenomenology in the perspective of qualitative research. Purposive Sampling Method was used to reach the aim at this for selections of participant teachers. In the term of 2015-2016 education year datas were obtained by interviewing with 12 teacher in Atakum and in İlkadım, in the Province of Samsun. The datas of the study were obtained with semi structured form, including open-ended questions, prepared by researcher. NVİVO 10.0 software was used for the analysis of these datas. According to the participant teachers' answers about the perceptions of leadership, it is considered that they describe the leadership; leading, dragging crowds his behind, directing and shoving the way. It is considered that the perceptions of administration was described; rules, directing with the rules, organizing and administering. Teachers state that there are differences between leadership and administration. They state the reasons of these differences; while manages only manage their school, leaders affect all society. While administrators have necessities to manage in accordance with rules, leaders have the powers of taking initiative much more. While administration is considered as a job, leaders is considered as dedication. While every administrator is not a leader, every leader is a good administrator. At this point, it is noticed that most of the teachers prefer leader administrator than administrator. The teachers emphasize the features of effective leadership are hardworking, initiative, fair, honest, having the ability of empathy, persuasive, having the power of speech, having no prejudice, encouraging, charismatic, politic, open to originality, visionary, showing the way accordance with the aims and supporting teachers. It was ascertained that the expected behaviors from school administrators are providing a suitable work place, impartiality, taking initiative, consulting teachers about decisions, honoring teachers, encouraging the teacher with physical and moral stimulus. It noticed that the expected leadership behaviors from school administrators are following the procedure, having plan carry out the rules and procedure fairly, forming relations school and public, dealing with the problem of teachers and school. In the results of the obtained data,it was inferred that the participant teachers have some perceptions about leadership and school administration. In this context, ıt is understood that teachers focus on the words of effective leader and impartial administrator. Teachers relate leadership with the social relations. Although, they relative the administration with the procedures. Besides it was concluded that participant teachers' expectation from the administrators are being leader much more.
