Evaluation of the relationship between serum magnesium level and carotis intima media thickness in patients with end-stage renal failure receiving routine hemodialysis

Abstract (EN)

OBJECTIVE: Today, hemodialysis is the leading renal replacement therapy. Cardiovascular diseases, which are one of the most important causes of death in the world, are also among the common causes of death in hemodialysis patients. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the relationship between carotid intima media thickness, which is a determinant of atherosclerosis and cardiovascular risk, and magnesium level, which is an easily evaluated indicator for cardiovascular diseases MATERIALS and METHODS: This is a descriptive study. We evaluated 88 patients over the age of 18 and under the age of 80 who received hemodialysis treatment. The carotid intima-media thickness was measured and recorded as the average of the right carotid anf left carotid by Doppler ultrasonography. The blood values and magnesium values taken before routine hemodialysis treatment were recorded in all patients. RESULTS: We found a low negative correlation between magnesium values and right carotid intima-media thickness (p=0.023), and a low-level negative correlation (p=0.013) between magnesium values and left carotid intima-media thickness. We found a low level of negative correlation (p=0.010) between the mean carotid intima media thickness, calculated by taking the average thickness of the right carotid intima media and left carotid intima media, and the magnesium value. The negative correlation between Magnesium level and mean carotid intima media thickness continued with multiple regression analysis (p=0.004). We found a positive relationship (p=0.045) with age. CONCLUSION: Magnesium is a biochemical parameter that is easy to routinely study. In our study, we determined a relationship between carotid intima media thickness and magnesium level, which we can use to predict cardiovascular events. By evaluating this relationship, magnesium level and cardiovascular risks can be predicted beforehand. It is predicted that atherosclerosis and thus a decrease in cardiovascular events may occur with diets rich in magnesium, lifestyle changes, and additional medical treatments. However, further comprehensive studies are is needed on this subject.
